How do I take care of my tattoo while it heals?
A few general rules for healthy tattoo healing: hygiene, moisturizing, protection. Always follow your artist's instructions first.

Healing generally takes two to four weeks and calls for a few simple precautions: keeping the area clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun and friction. These tips stay general: always follow your artist's instructions first, since they know their technique and your tattoo.
Why to follow your artist's instructions first
Every artist has their own method and preferences (bandage type, recommended moisturizer, how long to protect the area). Their instructions take into account their technique and the products used during your session. If in doubt, always turn to them first, not to a general recommendation.
The general principles of healing
Alongside your artist's instructions, here are a few general rules widely shared in the tattoo world.
- Keep the area clean. Wash your hands before touching your tattoo and clean it gently with a neutral soap, without rubbing.
- Moisturize regularly. A thin layer of a suitable cream helps the skin heal without pulling or cracking. Avoid applying too much.
- Avoid direct sun on the tattooed area for the whole healing period, and once healed, protect it with sunscreen to preserve the colors and detail.
- Don't scratch or pick at any peeling skin or scabs that may appear: let them come off naturally.
- Avoid friction: tight clothing, backpacks, sports gear rubbing against the tattooed area.
- Avoid pools, baths, saunas, and the sea until the skin has fully closed up, standing water and chlorine increase the risk of infection.
What's normal during healing
Slight redness, mild swelling, or a bit of itching in the first few days are common skin reactions. Light peeling after a few days is also part of the normal process.
When to be concerned
Spreading redness, unusual warmth, significant swelling, pus, or fever are not normal signs of healing. If you notice any of these, don't try to treat it yourself: contact your artist quickly for guidance, and see a healthcare professional without delay if needed. These general tips never replace medical advice.
A question during healing
If you're unsure about anything in the days following your session, your first move should always be to contact your artist, since they know the details of your tattoo. See also Why do I need to sign a consent form before the session? as a reminder of that step.
